Four (Fashion) Magazines Every Man Should Own

EsquireWhile men’s publications like Maxim, KING and FHM has excellent, ummm, articles, for our purposes fashion takes a back sit to images of, well, you know. If you’re looking for inspiration of a different kind — namely, style — here are the four magazines you should keep handy.

Gentleman’s Quarterly. Better known of course as GQ, this magazine is so ingrained in the style culture that it’s become an adjective (That guy is so GQ). That might be enough to make you run in the other direction, but resist the urge. GQ’s reputation is earned through not only it’s eye for cool style, but interviews with guys you could learn a thing or two from. And then there’s The Sartorialist — the eye on the street, capturing fashion as it happens.

Esquire. With great articles (really) and great style, Esquire’s fashion editorial has started to feature more and more products for those of us who don’t have $2Gs to spend on a new suit. An editorial, for example, on the emergence of telfon and other stain guard protected men’s clothing was inspiring. Plus we love the Leisure Meter (monthly meter on how to spend your free time).

Details. Though this magazine often features pieces to appeal to your baser instincts, it’s a great place to go for practical (read: real life) style tips, as well as a host of how-to’s — as in, how to do all that stuff (shine your shoes, get the perfect shave) that you’re somehow just supposed to know.

Men’s Vogue. We begrudgingly put this magazine on the list. Like it’s female focused counterpart, the magazine is 90% ads. Good ads, but ads nonetheless. Also the covers look like a women’s magazine trying to do a men’s magazine. There’s something wrong about NBC nightly news anchor Brian Williams lounging across the cover of a magazine. But despite all its faults the magazine does have excellent fashion editorial that provides a solid introduction to high style for men.
