Degrees of Style

Surely a fashionista like you won’t let a little nip in the air and a dash of snow on the windowsill keep you from looking like a million bucks, will you? We thought so. On that note, we tell you how to be in vogue this winter… no matter where you are!

Brr… *ice forms on nose*: When the temperature ranges from below 0 degrees to 10 degrees…
Tsk tsk… not a good time to go trekking up the Himalayan slopes or visiting Alaska now, is it? No matter – we tell you how to look like a million bucks and stay warm all in one breath!
1) Layer up! The more layers you throw on the better – thermal underwear to begin with, followed by dark coloured long-sleeved shirts and tight pants in a waterproof and woollen material topped by a chunky knit jumper or sweater.
2) Now accessorise with mittens/ gloves, a beanie for your head, multi-coloured scarves (tartan prints are all the vogue), thick socks and a heavy-duty jacket. Quilted jackets in bright shades like electric blue, scarlet red and burnt orange are very in right now. Ensure that your jacket has a touque or at least a warmly lined hood.
3) Lastly, opt for insulated, treaded, waterproof boots that look masculine and have laces at the ankle to complete your high fashion and low temperature look!

Thawing Out From Blue: When the temperature settles to a slightly better 10-20 degrees…
Now that your fingers aren’t a marvellous shade of blue and your breath isn’t freezing in mid-air, you can really get down to being fashionable!
1) Masculine modern meets feminine tight this winter so keeping that in mind, team boxy jackets with slim cigarette pants or heavy knit sweaters with a pencil skirt or black tights.
2) Knits are in this winter and how! Black knit dresses with boat necks and a cinched waist and tight sweater and shift dresses make for brilliant day wear options.
3) You could even experiment by combining different looks – a turtleneck worn under a round neck sweater or a black waistcoat over a white shirt.
4) Short ankle boots are a key trend this winter. Platform shoes, round-toed boots and wedges are also items to look out for.
5) Black, gunmetal gray, burgundy, deep red, navy, dull gold, peacock blue, royal purple and burnt orange are the main colours to look out for; while dull plaids, geometric designs, horizontal stripes and animal skins are the prints in vogue this winter.
6) Lastly, accessorise with faux fur hats and jackets and broad belts to look like you’ve come right off the ramp this winter!

Father Frost, Where Are You!: When the temperature is above 20 degrees…
Sigh… if you’re like us unfortunate people living in Mumbai, then you have no idea about the magic of winter. So simply keep a sweater or jacket with you and wear closed shoes to keep your feet warm and that’s all the winter clothing precautions you’ll ever need!
